Noted Chester County artist Adele Bateman Donahue died peacefully at her home in Wallingford on Sunday, May 14.
Born June 22, 1930 in Chestnut Hilll, PA to Dorothy Cassidy Bateman and Edmund Alberta Bateman, Adele was the third of seven children, all but one of whom, Betsy Malloy, predeceased her. Adele attended Mount St. Joseph's Academy where she made many of her lifelong friends. After attending Chestnut Hill College, she graduated from Rosemont College with a BFA in Studio Art. She married Charles Joseph Donahue on October 5, 1954 and they shared a wonderful life until his death in February of 1998.
In addition to exhibiting her award winning art, Adele worked for many years as an art teacher at Notre Dame de Namur in Villanova. She then headed the development offices of both Notre Dame and Mount St. Joseph Academy.
She is survived by her children Mary Donahue of Montclair, NJ, Suzanne Donahue of Astoria, NY, Christopher Donahue, of Bloomsburg, PA, Emily Donahue Brown, of Austin, Texas, Katrina Donahue Bullington, of Bel Air, MD, James Donahue, of Swarthmore, PA and Robert Donahue of Suwanee, GA, her twelve grandchildren and her sister Elizabeth Bateman Malloy.
A keen wit, great cook, lifelong reader, world traveler, passionate artist and indomitable force of nature, Adele will be profoundly missed. A funeral Mass will be held at Saints Philip and James Church in Exton on Friday May 19. Visitation is at 9:30 with mass to follow at 10:30.
