Alwin E. Michel, Jr., age 93, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, at Little Flower Manor in Darby, PA. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the beloved son of the late Josephine (nee Bersch) and Alwin E. Michel Sr. He lived most of his adult life in Yorktown, NY, but spent the last few years in Darby to be close to his eldest daughter, granddaughter and great grandchildren.
Al received his PhD from Cornell University and then made his career at the IBM Research Center as a solid-state physicist. His many contributions to IBM include his involvement in the invention of the injection laser and improvements in the process of manufacturing computer chips through ion implantation. After retirement he enjoyed building personal computers.
Al was active, athletic, and an avid outdoor enthusiast. He enjoyed skiing, canoeing, and hiking throughout his life, and even in his 80s was hauling and splitting wood to heat his home.
Family was paramount to Al. He was the loving father of Mary (Craig) Kane, Margaret (Don Gibbard) Michel, Patricia Michel, and Thomas Michel. He adored his grandchildren Laura (Greg) Boser-Kane, Carolyn (Dan) McGuigan, Stephen Michel, and Jason Michel. He especially enjoyed spending time with his great-granddaughters Emily and Kelsey McGuigan.
The family would like to thank the staff at Little Flower Manor for the loving and compassionate care they provided.
