Andrew "Andy" J. Dougherty, Jr., 54 yrs. of age, of Upper Darby, Pa. passed away on his birthday, April 4th, 2013 from a long illness.
A graduate of St. Joseph's Prep ('77) and Saint Joseph's University ('81), Andy worked in the sales industry, first as the district manager of Eagles Snacks, a subsidiary of the Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. and later as an account executive with Verizon. He also worked for the Upper Darby School District and Saint Joseph's Athletics before retiring due to his illness.
Active in the basketball community, Andy served as a manager in both high school and college, and was a manager of St. Joe's men's basketball team that upset #1 DePaul in the 1981 NCAA Tournament. He later coached the Central Life Hawks U12 team for a number of years, leading the squad to the 1980 AAU National Championship.
He also was an assistant coach with the girls' basketball team at Archbishop Carroll in the 1980's and the St. Alice girls CYO team. Andy joined the Marines ROTC unit while in college and received an honorable discharge. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Upper Darby Bell Telco Federal Credit Union for over a decade.
Survivors: Devoted husband of Anne Dougherty and loving father of A.J. Dougherty, Shannon (Joe) Crowley, Colleen Dougherty and Jimmy Dougherty. Beloved son of Jane Dougherty. Grandfather of Anthony and Jayda. Brother of Larry, Brian and Brendan Dougherty and Mary Ficco. Also survived by his many nieces and nephews.
