Ann Bernadette Schlanser, after a hard fought 2 ½ year battle with ALS, was welcomed peacefully into the Lord's loving arms on February 21, 2015. Ann will always be remembered by those who knew her, not only for her genuine warmth, beautiful smile and charming Irish wit, but also for being a congenial hostess. Family and friends enjoyed many hours of lively conversation around her dining room table, set always with her best china, linens, candles, fine silver, and (always) her own special flower arrangements.
She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Richard W. Schlanser. She is also survived by her two sons: David M. Schlanser (Jill) and Craig D. Schlanser (Denise) as well as two wonderful grandchildren, Beckett and Genevieve Schlanser. Her surviving siblings are: Paul Hursh (Rachael), Margaret Singer (Joe) and Phillip Hursh (Debra).
Ann was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Feb. 24, 1950, the third of six children of Charles M. and Gertrude M. Hursh, who both preceded her in death. She was preceded in death also by her brothers: Charles T. Hursh, and Michael J. Hursh.
While Ann was in her early teens, living in Downers Grove, Illinois, her mother returned to her profession as a nurse and she entrusted Ann to be caregiver and housekeeper for the family while her mother and father were working. It's no wonder that she became the competent mother that she was to her own family. Married at only 19, Ann moved to Chester County, PA in 1970 where she and her husband Rick built their first home for their growing family. She was an exemplary wife and mother whose achievements revolved around her family and home. She earnestly accepted the greatest duty of a woman; to raise her two sons to be sound in body, mind and character. Together with her husband they made their way in the world; Rick as breadwinner with Ann as his partner and homemaker. After their sons were raised, she followed her dream of becoming a multi-talented floral designer. Prior to retiring in 2013, she worked as a medical receptionist, often receiving compliments from patients about her excellent communication skills as well as her warm demeanor.
Relatives and friends are invited to her vigil service on Saturday, March 7, 10:00am to 11:15am at St. Joseph Church, 460 Manor Ave, Downingtown, PA 19335, immediately followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am.
We kindly request that in lieu of flowers, donations are made to the Lords Pantry: www.lordspantryofdowningtown.org.
