Anne Mickle Register, most recently of Paoli, Pennsylvania, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, August 13, 2016. She was born on October 2, 1929 in New York, to Charles Chew Mickle and Mabel Banks Mickle. She spent the earliest days of her very happy childhood in Darien, Connecticut. When she was five, her family moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where they lived on a farm on the Corsica River in Centreville. Her life was filled with ponies, horses, dogs, and sailboats. Anne attended The Gunston School in Centreville, Maryland, and The Grier School in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. She moved with her family to La Jolla, California, where she met her husband, Albert Layton ("A.L.") Register III. A.L., who was a graduate of the US Naval Academy. They were married in March of 1952, and their wedding trip was a drive across the country to Newport, Rhode Island. That began a series of many moves through her long life including among others, Gates Mills, Ohio; Rumson, New Jersey; Hartfordshire, England; Houston, Texas; Stamford, Connecticut, and back to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Anne and A.L. were divorced in 1986, having lived most of their years together raising their three children in Rumson.
Anne continued riding and sailing throughout most of her life, and was an accomplished artist. She lovingly created portraits of dogs and horses, in oil paint, pastel, and bronze sculpture. She was passionate about animals, and was able to capture them with an uncanny eye. She once remarked that when delivering the portrait of a friend's three English Mastiffs, the best compliment she ever received was when the dogs barked at their likenesses. Her most noted piece was a bronze sculpture of Dolly, the beloved horse of Lord Mountbatten. This statue resides with the Royal Horse Guards in London. One of her last pieces was also her largest-a life-size fox, cast in bronze, commissioned to grace a garden at the home of the long time Master of Kent County Hounds, with whom she rode as a child.
Anne was dearly loved and is deeply missed by her family and a wide circle of friends that she made in each place she lived. She is survived by her three children, Candace Register Langan, who is the widow of M. William Langan, Croft Register and his wife Pamela, Frederick Register and his wife Connie, her sister Patricia Mickle Ingles, brother Charles Mickle, eight grandchildren, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on October 1 at 11 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown in Chestertown, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
