Anthony Cocco

July 10, 1925 — June 21, 2013

Anthony Francis "Tony" Cocco, age 87, of Upper Darby, PA, passed away on June 21, 2013. Born in Philadelphia on July 10, 1925, Tony was the son of the late Louis John and Lena Cocco (nee Bellano).



Tony grew up in Philadelphia. He graduated from Overbrook High School in 1943. After high school he attended college at Villanova where he received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1945. He joined the US Navy upon entry into Villanova in July 1943, as part of the WWII V-12 Navy College Training Program. Upon graduation, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal and American Theatre Ribbon. He was released from active duty in 1946, and honorably discharged in 1966. In 1951, Tony graduated from Lehigh University with a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering, and then proceeded to earn his professional engineer's certification (P.E.) in 1961.



He worked for various engineering firms, including Kain and Hooven in 1958, where he met his lovely wife. He later worked for, and then retired from the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1993, spending most of his career specializing in structural engineering.



Tony married Ann O'Hara in 1959 in Springfield, PA. They were happily married for 54 years, residing in Upper Darby, PA and spending many memorable summers down the shore in Margate and later, Ocean City, New Jersey.



He loved to travel, and he and Ann spent much of their retirement travelling around the U.S. and Canada as tour guides and meeting planners. His other favorite role was being a proud and doting PopPop to his young grandchildren.



Anthony was preceded in death by father, Louis J. Cocco, and his mother Lena.



He is survived by his wife Ann Cocco, his son Anthony F. Cocco, Jr, his daughter Mary A. Donnelly (Jim) of Clearwater, FL, and Regina E. Cocco (Fred Nelson) of Silver Spring, MD; his brother John Cocco of Media, PA; his nephew Gary Cocco; his niece Jane (nee Cocco) Clark; and his beloved grandchildren AnnaMaria Donnelly, Shane Donnelly, Anthony Donnelly, Vivien Nelson, and Louis Nelson.



A visitation will be held at Donohue Funeral Home at 8401 West Chester Pike in Upper Darby on Thursday June 27, 2013 from 6-8pm. The funeral mass will be on Friday June 28, 2013 at 10:30am at St Laurence Church, 8245 West Chester Pike in Upper Darby, PA. Burial will follow the mass at SS Peter and Paul Cemetary on 1600 S. Sproul Rd in Springfield, PA.
