Anthony 'Tony' Castagna

May 23, 1945 — December 4, 2020

On Friday, December 4, 2020, Anthony ‘Tony’ Castagna, loving husband, father, and friend, passed away in the comforting presence of his wife and daughter.

Born May 23 1945 in Philadelphia, PA and moved to Newtown Square, PA with his family at the age of 10. He attended Marple Newtown High School and was an accomplished athlete, running in the Penn Relays his Junior year. He began his life long career as an arborist at the age of 15 with Mauer’s tree service in Newtown Square, PA. As a young man, he lived in Ft Lauderdale, Florida where he trained as a diving instructor and met his first wife, Amy. He helped restore a vessel, the Virgin Diver, and ran dive trips out of St Croix and the British Virgin Islands, which cemented his life-long passion for diving and spear-fishing. He even served as a safety diver on Neal Watson’s attempts to break the distance-diving world record between 1974 -1975. He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1977 where he established his first business, Costello's tree service, married, welcomed his daughter Katie, and resided for over 20 years. He lived briefly in Tucson, Arizona before he returned to his roots in Philadelphia in 2006, where he established Tri-County tree and found love again with his second wife, June. They married in Cabo San Lucas Mexico in 2016.

Tony was a dreamer, adventurer, and big personality with a passion for food, travel and diving. He treasured his pictures and memories from the three months he spent exploring the coast of Australia diving the Great Barrier Reef, as well as countless other dive trips to places like Fiji, Roatán, and Belize. He spent his summers in California boating and camping with friends and family on Lake Sonoma. He was an avid golfer and fulfilled a life-long dream of playing Murfield and St Andrews in Scotland with his closest friends and attending the Masters in 2010. Reflecting his entrepreneurial spirit, he sold and successfully rebuilt his tree service business four times over the course of his life in order to try his hand in other industries like motorcycle manufacturing and heavy equipment rentals. Tony’s energy, outgoing personality, and strong opinions made a lasting impression on everyone he met and he will be dearly missed.

Tony was preceded in death by his father, Victor, and his mother, Dolores. He is survived by his wife, June Smith (nee Coll), his daughter Katie Castagna, her mother Amy Castagna, step-children Abby Smith, Aaron Smith, and Olivia Smith, his siblings Victor Castagna, Emil Castagna, and Rosemary Powell, his niece and nephews Suzanne, Jimmy, Michael, Danny, and David, and his many friends in California and Pennsylvania.
