Augustine Smolik

July 16, 1921 — May 26, 2013

SMOLIK, AUGUSTINE M., age 91, on May 26, 2013, of Springfield, PA. Beloved husband of Charlotte H. (nee Auld) Smolik, dear father of Ruth T. Weisgerber (Fred), Sr. M. Charlotte Michael, O.Carm. and the late Thomas M. Smolik. He was the brother of the late Emily Wicks, Joseph and Louis Smolik and the uncle of Mary Ann Janca. Also survived by other nieces and nephews.



Mr. Smolik was a gunner's mate in the the U.S. Navy during WWII. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day, he was aboard dreadnought battleship, the USS Utah, watching "Gone With the Wind" when his ship was hit by torpedoes during the first few minutes of the Japanese attack and quickly sank. He was able to swim to shore while watching his shipmate sinking with the ship. He was then placed on burial duty.
