Bernice Robinson was born September 26, 1926, in Sumter, SC to Charlton and Birdie Mae Harley. Bernice was the third of five children.
After completing her early education Bernice relocated to Philadelphia, PA where she met and married William L. Robinson. William Robinson was a Police officer for the city of Philadelphia. From this union, she adopted two children, Alfreda Gilmore Rawlings and Diane Robinson. Bernice was a dedicated homemaker and took time to care for her children until they reached high school age. She then began her studies for her G.E.D. and she later took a position in the environmental department at the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart where she was a dedicated employee for over a decade.
Bernice was a faithful and devoted member of the Sharon Baptist Church for over 50 years until she was physically unable to attend. Bernice was the nucleus of the family, hosting many holiday gatherings and family events. She enjoyed cooking and was known for her spectacular sweet potato pie and potato salad. Spending time with her family was her priority and she took time to impart wisdom to everyone she encountered.
Bernice is pre-deceased by her late husband William (Billy), her father Charlton, Sr., her mother, Birdie Mae, her sisters, Louise, Birdie Mae, Delores, and brother Charlton, Jr.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Alfreda Gilmore Rawlings (Brian) and Diane Robinson. Over the past 10 years, she has had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Clyde Gilmore, who is the half-brother of Alfreda. She was the proud grandmother of Rebekah (Shaun), Michael (Sophie), Jason, Bashir (Christa) and Basil, and great-grandmother of six, Zoe, Andre, Isaiah, Maranda, Michael, Jadan. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, Pearl, Sylvia, Audrey, Renea, Andrea and Charlton, III.
We are greatly saddened by her departure, but we are tremendously blessed and honored to have had her in our lives. She led a bright pathway for us to follow during her 98-year journey on earth. Her commitment to family, health and faith is proof of what we have all come to celebrate. She will always be in our hearts and memories. We love you Mom.
