Bertha Ebersol

September 2, 1914 — November 11, 2013

Bertha Huff Ebersol, 99, died of complications from heart failure on Monday, November 11, 2013.

She spent the last month of her life under the tender care of Barclay Friends in West Chester, PA. Prior to that she lived independently in her home at Hershey's Mill in West Chester, where she and her husband, Elmer T. Ebersol, had retired in 1995.

Bertha and Elmer were married for 66 years, beginning their life together in the Boston area when Elmer was in the Army Signal Corps stationed at MIT during World War II. At the end of the war they moved to Hackettstown, NJ, where Bertha's mother was living. They raised their young family there until moving to Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ to be closer to Elmer's work in Manhattan.

In her own right Bertha was an accomplished professional. She earned a B.S. at New Jersey College for Women (later Rutgers) and an M.S. at Montclair University, both in home economics. She taught home economics on the elementary, secondary, and adult levels in Highland Park, Belleville, and Ridgewood, NJ. She was a life member of the American Home Economics Association and was president of the state association and delegate to an international convention in Helsinki, Finland. Throughout her career she maintained a keen interest in international foods. One of her favorite projects was introducing elementary children to ethnic food through hands-on workshops. On the personal side, coming from humble beginnings, she was a generous woman who loved to share time with her family. People who knew her were amazed at how well she kept up with the modern world at her tender age of 99.

Bertha remained active in the churches in the communities where the family lived, and she frequently organized craft groups and cookbook activities. She was a life learner in all areas of international foods, preparing theme dinners for the church and for family gatherings. She and Elmer traveled extensively to Europe, South America, Asia, and the United States.

She was the loving mother of Carol Fox and her husband Arturo (Mechanicsburg, PA), the late James Ebersol, Elaine Milko and her husband Carl (Roanoke, VA), and Larry Ebersol and his wife Janie (West Chester, PA). Additionally there are 12 grandchildren (one deceased) and 17 great grandchildren (one deceased) and two more on the way.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation 9:30-10:00 AM and to her Funeral Service 10:00 AM Saturday at the Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 S. Valley Road, Paoli, PA 19301. Interment Union Cemetery, Hackettstown, NJ.
