Bruce loved just about every aspect of his life, but especially his high school sports achievements and friendships, his Williams College experience and friendships, his Wharton Business School friendships, and his family and his dogs. Not to mention Beach Boys concerts, baseball cards, and vacations. But most of all, Bruce loved summers at home on the patio.
Bruce Arthur Kraig was born during World War II in the Bronx on December 15, 1944. The family moved to Burnt Hills, upper New York State when he was two. He remembered the remoteness with fondness, recalling riding his bike to the store for candy. When he was in first grade, the family moved to Darien, Connecticut, which became his beloved hometown. He thoroughly enjoyed Darien High School lettering in Basketball and Tennis.
After high school, he attended Williams College. The following excerpts are from his 25th Reunion Book and 50th Reunion Book.
“I was lucky to go to a school like Williams where I was able to learn to think independently but more importantly grow as an individual and develop friendships that extend beyond four years of college. In the summer of ’68, I married my beautiful wife, Tammy. We had met on a blind date when she was at Vassar my junior year.
After graduation I spent three years in the Navy and then went to Wharton for an MBA in finance. I have stayed in the Philadelphia area since 1971 and have liked it very much. The next 20 years were spent at a large regional bank and Sun Oil Company, both of which I enjoyed. However, in 1992, Tammy and I started our own investment management company. We are very happy being our own bosses.
We have raised three beautiful children: Christopher, Alicia, and Duncan. I am proud of my children, not so much for overt accomplishments but because they are exhibiting the qualities that will allow them to become caring adults. It is harder to grow up today than it was in the ’50s and ’60s for us.”
Some additional highlights of Bruce’s life were playing in the 3rd Naval District Tennis Tournament at Forest Hills, NY, three years in a row. He won two times out of three which qualified him to compete in the all-Navy tournament in Newport, Rhode Island. He wrote: “After the Navy, I played a lot of tennis and have achieved some modest, if regional success. Three years ago [now 28 years ago] I was lured back into the hobby of baseball card collecting…which allows me to spend time with my two boys, endlessly discussing statistics and standings. Even my daughter has occasional moments when she will sit and watch a game with us.”
Bruce enjoyed working at his firm and considered his clients friends whose success he strived very seriously to ensure. He loved the Beach Boys and attended 27 concerts. He was very knowledgeable about rock and roll music of the ’60s and impossible to beat at trivia questions about that era.
Bruce loved his daughters-in-law Beth and Faith and their wonderful children: Will and Ben (Christopher and Beth) and Winnie and Verity (Duncan and Faith). He was looking forward to following their exploits. As he wrote in his 50th Reunion book: “All three of our children live in the immediate area and we are extremely happy they are so close.”
Bruce died peacefully in his sleep in his bed at home on March 20, 2025. It was 80 very good years. In addition to his family, Bruce is survived by his older brother Thomas L. Kraig of Barrington, Rhode Island, and his younger sister Katherine Marie Kraig of Darien, Connecticut. And as Bruce often said, he would not leave his home unless it was feet first.
