He completed his education at University of Rochester in 1956, and following graduation attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton's School of Business. While at Penn, Carl was called to serve in the military as an officer of the United States Navy and spent most of his peacetime service at sea aboard the USS Vandivier.
In 1958, during this period of service, he met his soon to be wife, Kathleen Carol Berg, whom he celebrated marriage in 1960. "Kathy", as she was known to Carl, was his one true love. They were lovingly devoted to each other for 55 years and together, they had two daughters, Carolyn and Christine and a son David.
After his military service, Carl pursued a long and accomplished career in institutional and personal finance beginning at Alfred I.
