Carol M. Vandergast, 76, of West Chester, PA, passed away on February 9, 2021.
Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1944, she was the daughter of the late Carl O. and Renate (nee Rebstock) Ruhman.
Carol was the beloved wife of T. Joseph Vandergast; loving mother of Mark Vandergast (Renee) and Kirstin Smith (Reid); adoring grandmother of Katie, Julia, and Abbey Vandergast, and Kim, Kelly, Haley, and Lexi Smith.
Carol led a virtuous life in which she shared her friendly, loving, energetic personality with everyone. Carol was most proud of her family and would always put their needs ahead of her own. It was not uncommon that her family, kids and grandchildren, would seek her advice, usually in the middle of the night, as she made herself available providing sound advice. There was never an event Carol didn’t attend in support of her children and grandchildren. The dedication and unconditional love she gave to her family was unwavering.
At her core, Carol enjoyed people and spending time with family and friends. Carol’s family was small, but she built a huge family around her in the friendships she made. Her network was deep and wide with lifelong friends from all walks of life. There was never a time that Carol entered a room without a smile. She led her life with her best foot forward and was always willing to share her smile with anyone in need.
Volunteering in her Community was important to Carol. She was an active citizen in her community throughout her life. Carol was a volunteer with the Youth Aid Panel, Parks and Recreation Board, and Girls Club in Lansdowne, the Youth Aid Panel in Newtown Square, and was the Treasurer of Eaton Village in Hershey’s Mill, West Chester.
Carol was an independent thinker with a strong constitution. Carol loved and respected everyone and was very generous. She helped others with no need to be recognized, always doing right without the limelight.
A Celebration of Carol’s life will be held at a later date.
