Charles A. DiPaola, 90, of Pompano Beach, FL and formerly of Springfield, PA passed away on August 22, 2014.
Born in Sicily Italy in 1924, Charles was the son of the late Filadelfo and Josephine DiPaola.
He was a Scout with the 4th Marine Division, Marine Charles DiPaola hit the beaches of Iwo Jima on the first day of fighting, February 19th, 1945 and was heavily involved with anti-sniper activity, mopping up operations, and grave registrar duties. He and his unit would remain on the island until the end of fighting, one month later in March 1945. After the War he was transferred to the 3rd Marine Air Wing for the remainder of his enlistment Tail Gunner for 18 months and received the Purple Heart. On December 7Th, 2004 received the American Flag that was flown over the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) ship in remembrance of the 63rd anniversary of the attach on Pearl Harbor,He was an active member of the Intracoastal Detachment 1058 Marine Corps League, in Fort Lauderdale, FL, since 2004.
He ran his own business, Pioneer Equipment, in the Commercial Maintenance industry in Philadelphia, PA until his retirement 25 years ago.
He was the loving father of Philip DiPaola (Margaret) of Fallowfield, PA, Grace Robinson (Todd) of Loveland, OH and Maria DiPaola of Philadelphia, PA ; loving grandfather of Philip, Olivia and Sophia, Matthew and Mitchell. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Grace DiToro.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet his family 9:30-10:20 am Saturday, August 30, 2014 and to his funeral service immediately following at 10:30 am at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082, 610-449-0300. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA.
