Charles Yarnall, III

August 20, 1922 — January 12, 2018

Charles Herbert Yarnall, III was born in Philadelphia on August 20, 1922. He is descended from a fine Quaker family which first came with William Penn from Worcestershire, England in 1683. Sadly, his father died suddenly when Charles was only 8 years old leaving him, as the older of two sons, to assist his mother at the beginning of the Great Depression with financial difficulties and keeping the family heading in the right direction. This sense of responsibility and stability was repeatedly demonstrated throughout his 95 years.

His intelligence was noted by his benevolent godmother "Aunt" Carol Watts who paid for his education at the Episcopal Academy. He graduated at the top of his class, and was described by words such as quiet, steady, and dependable. A perfect score on a monthly test was not uncommon to him. He received a full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania where his studies were interrupted by a tour of duty in the United States Army 813th Signal Service Company, 3103rd. Battalion. He was sent to England aboard the Mauritania and was intimately involved in deceiving the Germans that the "D day" invasion would, as they were inclined to believe, come at Calais instead of Normandy. He was sent into France and was active in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to Penn and graduated in 1948. He worked in the Insurance division at DuPont for 36 years until his retirement in 1985. He also had his own photography business for many years, covering weddings nearly every Saturday. He had a darkroom in the basement and processed the photographs himself. Many evenings were spent assembling albums with meticulous care.

Charles was a life- long Episcopalian. He was active in many parishes in the Delaware Valley, most notably Trinity Parish, Swarthmore, where he served several terms as vestryman. He was an acolyte as an adolescent and a frequent usher as an adult. He drove for Meals on Wheels and brought widows to church. He was an active communicant until his passing at St. Francis In The Fields, Malvern. Additionally, he was active in several Bible study groups.

Charles met and fell in love with Dorothy Anna Taylor, and they were happily married on May 13, 1961. They were together for 49 years until her death in 2010. He was a stalwart family man. He is survived by his daughter, Beth Anne Yarnall Pietrzak of Collegeville, PA, and his son

Dr. David Charles Yarnall and daughter-in-law Kristi Darlene James Yarnall of Oak Hill, VA. He has four grandchildren whom he adored - Trevor Colin, Brenton James, and Lauren Wray Yarnall of Oak Hill, VA and Nicole Elizabeth Pietrzak of Collegeville. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother Robert King Yarnall in 1988.

Charles loved spending time with his family in Ocean City, NJ. The family enjoyed boating, going to the beach and walking the boardwalk. In retirement, Charles and Dorothy travelled extensively including trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China and Russia. He was a lifelong model

railroad enthusiast particularly at Hershey's Mill, and even owned a hobby shop, Hobbyland, in West Chester with his brother.

He was an excellent Bridge player, and also enjoyed playing pool with the billiards club at Shannondell, winning the championship trophy several times. He was an avid reader and had a continued love of learning, as evidenced again by studying French in his last years.

Charles lived for 28 years in Wallingford, 13 years in

Hershey's Mill in West Chester, and then moved to Shannondell in Audubon, in 2009. He was driving his car and going to the gym three times a week just days before Thanksgiving. Charles passed on peacefully after a short illness on the morning of Friday, January 12th, 2018.

A Requiem Eucharist dedicated to the Glory of God with Thanksgiving for his life will be held at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, Malvern on Saturday, January 20th, 2018. Visitation at 9:00 AM with the service beginning at 10:00AM. Interment immediately following at Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Church Farm School, Exton, PA.
