She was predeceased by her parents Alfred W and Vivian L Hawkins III; her brother Edward R Hawkins; and sister Elaine S Nelson.
Growing up on 17th Street in Philadelphia gave her a taste of childhood where the city was her playground, with all the unique experiences that brings, even getting the chance to sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on the radio.
Her family moved to Collingdale when she was a young girl and following her graduation from Collingdale High School she lived briefly in Brooklyn, NY working at Loehmann’s Department Store, further developing her appreciation for fashion, fine clothes, and all things beautiful.
She returned home and went to work as a draftsperson at Bell Telephone. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Frank, who had come to the house to recruit Delores’ brother in to the Army and, in the words of her sister Vivian, “Dee walked down the steps, Frank looked up at her, she looked at him, and that was it.”
They married in 1951 and after Frank’s return from Korea, started their family in Glenolden. She delighted in being a mother, her two boys, Frank and Edward, the most precious things in her life. She strove to create a beautiful, warm, and loving home for her family where delicious family meals were a vital part of the day. The family moved briefly to Colorado and then later built their home in Thornton, PA where they raised their sons, then moved to Downingtown later in life.
As her boys grew up, she rejoined the workforce as a U.S. Postal Clerk at the Concordville Post Office where she made many friends, kept up on local news, and was later presented a Service Award for “Grateful Appreciation” of her 21 years of honorable service.
Among her many interests, was her great passion and admiration for fine art which she shared with her grandchildren through the years and was herself a skilled artist. She also loved listening to music, shopping, cooking, and playing cards and Scrabble. She was a special woman who will be remembered lovingly and missed greatly by her family and friends.
