Dominic M. Roberti, Ph.D., age 81, of Bryn Mawr, PA, passed away on July 15, 2014. Dom had endured over 20 years of treatments for prostate cancer and his condition was stable. His death from a heart attack was unexpected. Dom's wife Carole was at his side in their home, holding his hand, when he passed.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, Dom was the son of the late Angelo and Christina Roberti. He graduated from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and then went on to earn his Ph.D. from Princeton University. Dom returned to St. Joseph's University as a professor to teach chemistry for almost 30 years. He retired from St. Joseph's in 1995 and pursued other interests, of which there were many.
Dom began a desktop publishing business where he and Carole designed and typeset many books and newsletters as well as the St. Joseph's University catalogs and directories. He also began volunteering at the Cancer Support Community in Fairmount Park. He talked to and comforted newly diagnosed cancer patients, and taught yoga and meditation classes. He also continued some involvement with organizations such as The Catholic Peace Fellowship, The Catholic Worker, and The Interfaith Walk for Peace and Justice. In recent years, he and Carole became active in the Philadelphia Buddhist Association, where Dom served on the board, taught meditation classes, and attended retreats.
Dom was very interested and concerned about ecological issues, did much reading and research on the topic, and wrote a book entitled "Essays for Gaia". In the past 15 years Dom taught adult education classes related to meditation and Buddhism. About 6 months ago, Dom and Carole became reconnected with the Medical Mission Sisters and applied to become Associates. This organization of Catholic Sisters works with poor and oppressed people throughout the world, rendering medical care and striving for justice.
Dom was the beloved husband of Carole M. Roberti (nee Miller); loving father of Rosemary R. Browne and husband Matthew, and John Roberti and wife Eiko; dear brother of late Theresa Dixon; beloved grandfather of Sarah, Christopher, Thomas, Dominic, Jonah, and Clara.
A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Medical Mission Sisters Chapel, 8400 Pine Road, Philadelphia, 19111.
