A star was born on October 5th, 1926. This special star, Doris Marie Kamp, brightened the lives of many loved ones until December 16th, 2020.
Doris was born in Philadelphia as the only child to Charles and Mae Kamp. She shared her strong catholic faith with her mother and was the apple of her father's eye. During her early years she was surrounded by the love of her aunt's, uncles, and cousins, and attended St. Mary's Academy in Philadelphia. Many afternoons were spent with her beloved Grandma Kamp baking cakes and playing dress up. Doris went on to attend Chestnut Hill College and earned a degree in English literature. Shortly after graduating she made the bold decision to move to Paris and pursue a modeling career. With her strikingly good looks, charisma and warmth, it wasn’t long before Paris became "Her City," where she was often mistaken for Liz Taylor.
When Doris returned to the states, she became the first super model before the term was popular. As the face of Bell Telephone and the U.S. Marine Corp, she was pictured daily in newspapers and magazines. In the 195Os she was the official "Pepsi Cola Girl," a beautiful icon bringing the latest drink into everyone's home.
But when Doris met Dr. John (Jack) Shaffer it was the beginning of an epic era that would last over 50 years. They embraced a busy family life and enjoyed extensive traveling and socializing. Their homes in St. David's, Long Beach Island, and Marbella Spain, were places to enjoy both family and friends. Their unique style and charisma epitomized the glamour of New York, and it became a ritual to play "New York, New York" whenever they entered a restaurant or party. They certainly did things their way.
No one could light up a room like the star, Doris. In fact she never attended a bad party, because if she was there, it was a good one. But Doris possessed much more than glamour, she also had the unique ability to make a difference in people's lives as evidenced by her many close friends. When not being the life of the party, Doris enjoyed reading, educating herself on many different subjects, and decorating her homes.
An epic era has truly come to an end. A wild era of glamour, glitz and incredible passion for wanting to connect with everyone she met. With the ability to make so many people feel special, Doris enhanced people's lives. What a circle of life Doris created!
She is survived by her daughters Denise and Carol; her sons, Charles, Joseph, and Peter; her grandchildren Sean, Ryan, Caroline, and Ava, who all affectionately called her GG "gorgeous grandmother;" her cousin Judy, and her dearest friend, Aunt Lida.
