Dorothy Mae Peay

June 6, 1938 — March 18, 2025

Drexel Hill

On June 6, 1938, God, in his infinite wisdom, allowed a bundle of Joy to enter the world and be born to proud parents, Elijah Lee and Nany Delmore Richards-Lee in Bowling Green, Caroline County, Virginia. Elijah and Nany named their precious daughter, Dorothy Mae Lee, who was also known as June.

Dorothy accepted Jesus Christ at a young age and was Baptized along with her siblings at Saint James Baptist Church. On March 18, 2025, Dorothy heard the voice of God. She closed her eyes quietly and quickly answered God’s call to her new home in glory. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Elijah Franklin and Nany Delmore Lee, and her siblings Louise Lee, Phillip Lee, and Margaret Peay-Brown.

Dorothy loved children and worked as a nanny in Quantico, Virginia for a few years before meeting and marrying Gonzales Peay, Jr. Their union was blessed with six children. Dorothy and Gonzales made Philadelphia their home, where they raised their family. Dorothy worked as a teacher assistant for many years. Dorothy loved music and loved dancing to the “Motown Oldies.” She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Dorothy was soft spoken, and a private person. Her hobbies were card and board games, and watching the daytime drama stories. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was loved by all.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Carol, Linda, John Calvin, Gonzales III (Wanda), Gurney, and Gail (Bill); sister: Ruby Virginia Samuels-Thorton; grandchildren: Michael (Nicole), Crystal (Rodney), Jackie (Angelo), Christopher (Kristine), Carletta, Teavone, Lavonda, Eric, Giovonni, Raquel, Tiffany, and Bianca; 24 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; special family friends: Brenda Goode and Sandra Shepard; a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Until we meet again, we all love you so much, and you will be truly missed.
