Dorothy Weaver Richter
Dorothy Weaver Richter, longtime resident of Devon Avenue, Wayne, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 25, 2022, at her last residence in Willow Grove. In her 95 years, she was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, and neighbor and is remembered for her wit and kindness.
Dorothy was born March 22, 1926, into the family of William Clayton Weaver and Dorothy Mildred (née Beal) Weaver at the homestead which stands today in Wayne, PA. As the only sister of four brothers: Harry, William (Pat), George, and Charles, Dorothy always said that because they were so protective, it was difficult to go on dates. When their parents passed, Dorothy and George were devoted to helping the youngest, Charles, excel as a student and football star and finish high school.
Dorothy graduated from Radnor High School and attended Drexel College. She found a fulfilling career at Curtis Publishing in Philadelphia and her efficiency helped her rise to Executive Secretary. She was elegant and chic and always dressed to the nines. Dorothy was known for her great sense of humor: sometimes clever, sometimes just plain funny, and sometimes wicked! She made life-long friends at work and at play. Dorothy also loved to shop and go out to lunch––an eating experience was judged by the quality of the Bloody Mary!
Dorothy met Wallace Frederick Richter New Years’ 1959 and they were married the following November. They celebrated their 55th anniversary before his passing. From their first date at the Ice Capades, Dorothy and Wally knew how to have fun! As weather permitted, they enjoyed wine or cocktails on their porch or patio before dinner. They had a busy and fulfilling social life as members of the Swedish Colonial Society and other Scandinavian organizations. She enjoyed the Masonic social events she attended with Wally. They traveled in their RV, which she hated, but she loved the picnics at the family property Hi-Top in Medford Lakes, NJ. All their nieces and nephews have stories about those picnics. While she didn't drive, she could navigate you to any place in Montgomery, Chester, or Delaware counties.
In retirement, Dorothy loved to read, bake goodies and garden. Dorothy loved flowers and always cultivated baskets and pots of flowers and herbs. She was a devotee of the Wayne Farmers Market. Dorothy had a knack for finding the perfect greeting card and brightening someone’s day with her thoughtfully worded messages.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s name may be sent to Surrey Services for Seniors, 60 Surrey Way, Devon, PA 19333 http://surreyservices.org/donate-today . This wonderful organization faithfully provided transportation to doctors’ appointments, stayed with her, and brought her home many times. Through this wonderful organization a special friendship bloomed with Lorna Shaw who called to chat regularly and brighten her day.
Dorothy’s passing has brought the end of an era for the Weaver and Richter families. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
There will be a celebration of Dorothy's life at The Donohue Funeral Home, 366 W. Lancaster Ave, Wayne, PA 19087 on April 30, 2022, from 1-2 pm.
