George M Abouna, 83, of Radnor PA, an internationally known Transplant Surgeon died on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 after a brief illness.
Dr. Abouna was of Chaldean heritage having moved from Iraq to England where he obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering followed by a medical degree from the University of Durham where he developed the Abouna Liver Perfusion machine.
In 1969, Dr. Abouna moved to the United States where he held academic and clinical appointments in Denver, Colorado; Richmond, Virginia; and Augusta, Georgia; and after a move for one year to Edinburgh, Scotland, he accepted an academic position in Calgary, Alberta where he performed the first liver transplant in Western Canada.
In 1978, Dr. Abouna accepted the Chair of Surgery at Kuwait University, Kuwait where he established the country's first transplant program and led the initiative in the creation of the living donor law as well as serving as the second president of the Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation.
After the invasion of Kuwait, Dr. Abouna joined the Transplant Program at Hahnemann Hospital until he was invited to become the Dean of the Medical College of the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain.
Upon retiring from this position, Dr. Abouna remained active in his dedication to the field of transplantation.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Abouna received many awards including the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for humanitarian work.
He leaves behind his wife Cathy; former wife Jennifer, children Linda, Judy, Andrew, Ben, Sarah and Adam as well as two step-children, Wade and Carla; along with seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will be receiving condolences on Tuesday, October 4th at 10:00 am at St. Katherines of Sienna in Wayne, PA with Mass following at 11:00 am.
