Dr. Vincent T. Cipolla, D.O. September 24, 1922

Born in South Philadelphia, PA on September 24, 1922 to the late Dr. Thomas and Assunta (Iannelli) Cipolla. His family is from Lanciano, Italy....In the Abruzzi region of Italy. He was predeceased by his sister Irma (Cipolla) DeCaro.
Vincent T. Cipolla was the son of a doctor of and of parents who instilled the value of hard work and education. These fundamental values were exhibited by Vincent throughout his entire life, in his medical practice, his family relationships, and his diverse hobbies. He was raised on Ritner Street in South Philadelphia and attended Lasalle College High School. He received his undergraduate degree from LaSalle College. In his childhood years he was known as "the Prince of Ritner".
He was a lover of Formula 1 Racing in Europe. In the States, Vincent was a professional motorsports physician at Langhorne Speedway in the early Indy Car era of the 1950's. He was known to the drivers and fans as the "Race Doctor". Vincent was a mainstay at Mitchell and Ness for 3 generations of his family leadership of the company. He loved the Philadelphia Phillies. On his off days from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he would travel to Mitchell and Ness to talk Phillies Baseball with 3 generations of his family.
An accomplished musician, Vincent played the piano, trombone and French horn. He auditioned for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Vincent was a life-long learner and had diverse interests. He loved classical music, European History, building models and of course, Medicine. He enjoyed intellectual conversation.
Awards and Achievements
Dr. Cipolla graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1946. He then served as Professor of Anatomy and Chairman of the Anatomy Department in the 1970's and 1980's. In 1975 Dr. Cipolla received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching at the College. In 1986 and 1987 he was awarded Teacher of the Year at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Military Service
Dr. Colonel Cipolla served as General Surgeon and Chief of Surgical Service of the 108th Combat Support Hospital from February 1980 to September 1986.
In 1985 he received the Army Commendation Medal for his superior service in the Medical Corp.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Friday, May 30, 2014 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 31, 2014 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA and to his Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m. St. Laurence Church, 8245 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA.
Interment will follow in Fernwood Cemetery.
