Dr. Joan M. Freimuth

Joan Maria Freimuth, M.D., (nee Sapp), age 92, of Villanova, PA, passed away on October 9, 2022. Born in Frackville, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Stella Sapp (nee Dixon).

Dr. Freimuth was a pioneer woman in medicine. Dr. Freimuth attended Temple Medical School in the 1950s, at a time when few women became physicians. She subsequently went on to build a large private practice as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. Her work left a positive impact on her community, and over the course of her career, she helped hundreds of children and families in the area with mental health issues. She worked for many years for the Bryn Mawr Child Psychiatry Center.

Dr. Freimuth was a lover of literature, gardening and poetry and always took time to share those joys with others. She was a published author of several poetry anthologies, and she also compiled and published the life works of her brother’s poetry. She was a fervent enjoyer and supporter of theater and the arts, as well as a performer herself when the opportunity was permitting. She was also the Co-Owner of The Hearth Baker, a successful artisan bakery and deli in Lansdale, PA.

Dr. Freimuth was one of 8 siblings and was predeceased by her son, Douglas Freimuth (Lori Beube Carroll). She is survived by her beloved husband Dr. Erich Freimuth, whom she built a family with over more than sixty years. She is survived by her loving children Loren Aguiar (Erich), and Erich Freimuth, Jr. (Marilyn Bertrand) of St. Davids, PA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rui Aguiar, Tyler Aguiar, Ava Aguiar and Samuel Freimuth and his mother, Nancy Gottlieb.

Services and interment are private.
