Gisela Kaeten (nee Vopel), 88, of West Chester, formerly of Raritan, NJ, passed away on December 25, 2014.
Gisela Kaeten, born in Berlin-Spandau, Germany in 1926, received her medical degree from Humboldt University after which she emigrated to the United States in 1956 and married Karl Kaeten. The mother of three children (Karl-Ludwig Kaeten, Eva Sirinek and Renate Harvat), she opened her private practice in Raritan, NJ in 1962. As one of the first female physicians with admitting rights to Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ, Dr. Kaeten continued to grow her practice with great skill and caring through the years. She was referred to in the media as the "rare breed of homo sapien known as the humanitarian professional," having given her time to others in need with organizations such as the "Baby Keep Well Station" run by the Bridgewater and Raritan Township Boards of Health. She was a member of Zonta International as well as having been honored in 2002 with a 50-year Golden Merit Award member of the Medical Society of New Jersey.
Her love of learning was further enhanced by her extensive world travel upon her retirement with both family and friends. Destinations included Europe, the far east, Africa, and South America. Additional interests included music, painting, sewing, knitting, sculpting. Dr. Kaeten is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren as well as many dear friends and former colleagues.
She remains admired and loved.
