Dr. Rodney S. Smith, CDR, USN (Ret), 71 of Newtown Square, PA passed away on May 27th, 2015.
Born in 1944 in Williamsport, PA, he was the son of the late Fred H. Smith and Mary (Stevenson) Smith.
An accomplished orthodontist serving Chester County, he obtained his undergraduate degree at Gettysburg, his doctorate degree at the University of Pittsburgh and conducted his residency at Einstein Medical Center. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base and then the Philadelphia Naval Base, concluding his naval career in the reserve service. On his way to successfully obtaining his National Board Certification in Orthodontics (1995) he served as President of the Pennsylvania Association of Orthodontics in addition to holding offices in numerous other professional organizations.
Rodney was the beloved husband of Bluma Smith; loving father of Tristie A. Brotze (Paul) of Downingtown, PA, Michael D. Smith of Glenmoore, PA, and Ryan S. Smith of West Chester, PA; loving grandfather of Lavinia, Aidan, Liam, Benjamin, Riley and Shelby; dear brother of Sandra Billington (Ron) and loving uncle of Gary, Shelley and Shannon.
In life he always appreciated the outdoors, engaging in hiking and camping since childhood, and later kayaking. Photography, history, and all things maritime were passions he wonderfully savored. A tinkerer, he was often found doing home and yard improvements as working with his hands provided him joy. While both Chincoteague and the Outer Banks were his preferred retreats, he kept his passport active with world travels.
Rodney was a warm man, loved dearly by family, friends and patients.
Those who wish to attend his memorial service on June 6, between 10 a.m. and 12:00 noon, at the Donohue Funeral Home at 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA, 610-431-9000, are welcomed.
