Dr. William D. Vanderwerff, 87, of West Chester, PA passed away on June 5, 2017.
Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1929, William was the son of the late William and Ethel (Longenecker) Vanderwerff.
He attended William B. Hanna Elementary School and Shoemaker Junior High School in Philadelphia. Following a family move to Mt. Ephraim, NJ, he attended Mt. Ephraim Elementary and Audubon High School.
William was a 1951 Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry.
He worked as a Quality Control Chemist, Chief Chemist and Production Supervisor in the Explosives Department of du Pont in both New Jersey and Illinois. He served honorably in the US Army for two years, including a tour of Korea. He then returned to the University of PA, where he earned his Doctorate in Organic Chemistry in 1960.
His entire professional career was spent at Sunoco at their Research & Development Laboratory in Marcus Hook, PA, where he progressed from Research Chemist to Division Manager until his retirement in 1988. He then devoted himself to studying and cataloguing the flora of all the Chester County Parks, two State Parks and one National Park in or adjacent to Chester County, while also developing a family genealogy.
William was the beloved husband of Betty Lou (Swain) Vanderwerff; loving father of Christina Stengl (Brian), Derek Vanderwerff, Hilda Riale (Vince) and Nicholas Vanderwerff; loving grandfather of K.C. Stengl, Sarah Millward, Garrett Stengl, Nikki Paonessa, Caitlin Walbridge, Carl Woodward, Nicole Vanderwerff, Hunter Vanderwerff and 6 great-grandchildren; dear brother of Shirley Kling.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing 9:00-11:00 AM Friday, June 9, 2017 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, Pa 19382, 610-431-9000 followed by his Funeral Service 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Philadelphia Memorial Park.
