Edna Nora Shermer (nee Darcy), 78, of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away on June 18, 2023.
Edna was the loving mother of Cassandra Doughty (Bill), Samantha Darcy, Amanda Elefante (Tony), and Bill Shermer; dear sister of Laurence Darcy (Helen), John Darcy (Laurie), Cotchie Darcy, Hilary McQuillan (Denis), the late Proinnsias Ní Dhorchaí (Chris), and the late Dymphna Darcy; also survived by 10 grandchildren; predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Kathleen (nee Murray) Darcy.
Edna grew up in the seaside town of Dún Laoghaire outside of Dublin, Ireland. She was athletic and enjoyed field hockey, Irish dancing, as well as fishing in the harbour near the East Pier with her father and sister Pron. Her love for animals, especially dogs, was evident at an early age, when she often rescued strays and brought them home. Edna spent her summers in the west of Ireland on the family farm in Ballina in County Mayo helping to tend the animals and crops. She had always loved American movies and listening to Elvis Presley, and at the age of 19, decided to move to Philadelphia. She worked for Curtis Publishing before marrying a Naval officer, starting a family and traveling the world. She was creative with many talents, including golf, bowling, painting, cooking, art collecting and sewing. Edna became a certified Dog Groomer in her 30s and built a reputation as one of the finest groomers in Delaware County. She was an avid football fan, especially the Philadelphia Eagles, and also followed golf and the career of Rory McIlroy. Some of her favorite TV shows to watch include The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Tom Selleck in Blue Bloods. Edna had a quiet, yet firm faith which carried her through some difficult years. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, joy and generosity for all who were blessed to have known her. Edna was an effervescent, trusting, and giving woman and she will be missed dearly by her family.
