Eddie "Slugger" O'Halloran, a prototype, old school, Philly basketball guard from Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Southwest Philadelphia passed away at age 88 on October 11, 2014.
Ed earned his notoriety while playing for the "Burrs" of West Catholic, graduating in 1943. He continued his basketball career at St. Joseph's College, where he was known for his Velcro-like defense, usually assigned to guard the other team's most prolific scorer.
Ed enjoyed playing for legendary St. Joe's coach Billy Ferguson and with teammates such as the late Jack Ramsay and Jack McEnroe, as well as many other great players.
Ed's collegiate basketball career was interrupted by his service in the Army during World War II and he graduated from St. Joe's in 1949 as a consequence. Next he played in the Old Eastern Basketball League for the Pottsville and York, PA teams. He also coached at west Catholic and Episcopal Academy.
Ed was voted the most valuable college basketball player in the City of Philadelphia in 1943-44, while only a freshman at St. Joe's College, and also best defensive player who appeared at Madison Square Garden in New York that year.
Eventually Ed was elected to both the St. Joe's Basketball Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. Additionally he was a two-time winner of the GEM Award from St. Joseph's College.
In 1952, Ed graduated from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Law School. He practiced law for over 50 years in the City of Philadelphia and even managed to run for Congress in Delaware County in 1968.
Ed was proud of his Irish roots and very loyal to his alma maters and many friends. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
He never married but served as an excellent role model to his admiring nephews throughout his life. In his later years he served as a caregiver to his devoted sister, Deborah Schofield, with whom he lived most of his life.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, Mary and John and his siblings, Deborah and Thomas (Ray) and his nephews, James and John O'Halloran.
Ed will be greatly missed by his nephews, Stephen J. (Madeline) Schofield, Esq., Paul E. Schofield; his great-nephews, Terrence (Nichole) and Timothy (Lynne) Schofield; and great-grands Abigail, Ryan, Chase, Avery and Sierra who loved him very much. He is also survived by one niece, Sarah Jane O'Halloran.
