Eleanor Dougherty

July 25, 1924 — June 21, 2013

Eleanor S. Dougherty (nee Ruggles), 88, of Upper Darby, PA died on June 21, 2013 at the Crozer-Keystone Hospice at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park, PA.



Born in Chester, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Mazie Ruggles (nee Martin). Eleanor was a 1942 graduate of Chester High School. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward F. Dougherty who died in 1983. Eleanor and her husband met when they both at Baldwin Locomotive in Eddystone. Her husband was a member of the Cardington Fire Company No. 4 since he was a young man, later serving as its President and then serving with the Fire Police. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Upper Darby until his retirement.



Eleanor was a homemaker. She enjoyed raising her 3 children. She also enjoyed being part of the Upper Darby Multi-Center for senior citizens, where she participated in art classes, line dancing, and trips to the casino. She was a member of the former Calvary Presbyterian Church in Upper Darby.



Eleanor is survived by her children William E. Dougherty (Mary) of Horsham, PA, Robert F. Dougherty (Barbara) of Wenonah, NJ, Barbara S. Gallagher (Patrick) of Springfield, PA, her brothers Stanley Ruggles of St. Petersburg, FL an Melvin Ruggles (Cesarine) of Hickory, NC, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her half -brothers Bertram Platt and Thomas Platt and her half-sister Ruth Lynch.
