Elizabeth Costello

April 2, 1949 — August 10, 2015

Liz Costello passed away peacefully on August 10, 2015 surrounded by the warmth and love of family and friends, following a brave, two year battle with breast cancer. Liz lived with her devoted husband, Don Shoffner, in Narberth, PA and also along the coast in Plymouth, MA. In addition to her husband, Liz is survived by her sister, Nancy, along with numerous in laws, nieces and nephews. Liz is also survived by her life-long best friend Julie Fitzgibbons and her two sons, David and Michael Scenna, who were like a second family to her. Additional survivors include a wide array of dear cousins and friends who live across the United States.

After graduating from Archbishop Prendergast HS in 1967 she later earned a BA in English Literature at St. Joseph's University. Liz worked as an executive with Liberty Mutual Insurance company. Initially, she worked in their Bala Cynwyd office in several positions rising to Underwriting Manager. She then was the Philadelphia Underwriting Manger with the Royal Insurance Company. Liz returned to Liberty Mutual in their Boston home office, where she served as Director of Commercial Liability until she retired from the industry. Liz was an intensely private person, who was intellectually brilliant, loved to read and was well informed on any conversational topic. She also was a gifted baker, who was known for her amazing ricotta Easter pie and lemon meringue pies. As a teenager she worked at Montbard's Bakery in Drexel Hill and dreamed of growing up to be a Cake Icer. In recent years she loved to sail, was also an avid rower and kayaker, who usually began her days in Massachusetts with a long, early morning outing on the Plymouth Harbour.

Liz was fit and beautiful until the time of her illness. She refused to tell others her age and was often compared with Natalie Wood. As a teenager, she was always being nominated for Beauty Queen pageants by her admiring beaus. Throughout her life, Liz was motivated by a core kindness, strong intelligence and loyalty. She was an intensely devoted daughter to her parents throughout their lives and cared for them both for many years as they aged.
