Elizabeth (Betty) R. Galbraith (née Ehling), formerly of Northeast Philadelphia, passed peacefully on April 22, 2019. Betty was just two weeks shy of her 97th birthday. She had been residing at Barclay Friends House in West Chester, PA.
Betty was born on May 10, 1922, in the Kensington section of Philadelphia to Francis (Frank) and Elizabeth Ehling. Her parents both emigrated from Hungary, and Betty returned to Europe as a child and again, in later years, with her sister and daughter.
Betty married Clarence Galbraith on November 26, 1942, and shortly afterward spent a year with him in San Diego while he served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. Betty and Clarence settled in Northeast Philadelphia where they had two children, Clarence John and Marlene. She worked throughout her marriage, running a corner store and delivering newspapers with Clarence, in addition to being a homemaker. She spent the final years of her career in retail with Lit Brothers and Strawbridge & Clothier.
Betty loved to have backyard parties with family and friends. She enjoyed her beer and once, after retirement, attended ‘beer campʼ with her sister.
Betty is survived by her children, Clarence John (wife Kathy) and Marlene (husband Kevin), grandson Brian (wife Katie), great grandson Brian Jr, sister Francis McDevitt (husband Jim), and nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing 9:00-10:00 AM Monday, May 13, 2019 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA, 19382 and to her Funeral Mass 10:30 AM at SS Simon and Jude Catholic Church, 8 Cavanaugh Court, West Chester, PA, 19382. Burial services will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, County Line Road, Feasterville, PA, 19053.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bettyʼs memory to St. Judeʼs Childrenʼs Hospital would be appreciated.
