Ernest W. "Ernie" Shelmerdine, Jr., age 86, of Havertown, PA, passed away on August 21, 2015.
Born in Nanticoke, PA to the late Helen (nee Sergey) and Ernest W. Shelmerdine, Sr., Ernie graduated from Northeast High School and proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was a devoted family man and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. His faith was also very important to him, he was a devoted member of St. Pius X Church. Ernie had a strong work ethic and worked as a Traffic Manager for the Whitman Chocolate Company for 20 years. He was a huge Phillies and Eagles fan, and his love of baseball was evident as he was an encyclopedia of the facts, stats and history of the sport. His favorite all-time baseball player was Stan "The Man" Musial. Ernie had a deep love of country and a passion for it's rich history. He had a love of music and Frank Sinatra was his favorite. Ernie will be remembered for his smile, great sense of humor and the jokes he told.
Ernie is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 52 years Suzanne C. Shelmerdine (nee Elligette), his dear children Brian (Kathleen), Mark (Denise) and Karen Johnson (Carl). He is also survived by his adored grandchildren Lauren Rose, Eric, Steven, Allison and Alex.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Thursday from 8:30-10:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073 610-353-6300 and to his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Rd., Broomall, PA. Interment SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
