Ethel Dougherty

May 20, 1923 — August 18, 2016

Born May 20, 1923 to Harry Mower Broomall, Sr. of Prospect Park, PA and Florence Natalie Fairlamb of Glenolden, PA. Ethel passed away on August 18, 3:45 PM, due to complications from a recent surgery.

Ethel was predeceased by her daughter, Cathy Metricarti, in 2014, and her husband, Francis "Frank" Joseph Dougherty, Sr. in 1988. They were married May 23, 1942 in St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Chester, Pennsylva...nia. Family and friends often remember the inseparable, affectionate couple as holding hands and laughing together.

Ethel is survived by Francis J. Dougherty, Jr (son), Nan Zacher (daughter), Betsy Talone (niece), Madeline Dougherty (daughter-in-law), Bob Metricarti (son-in-law), seven grandchildren (Shawn Dougherty, Jennifer Magee, Patrick Dougherty, Tim Zacher, Francine Zacher, Shanon Zacher, and Kristen Metricarti), and eleven great grandchildren.

Ethel attended Glen-Nor High School. Her senior yearbook reports, "The 1941 record for silence is held by Ethel, who breaks it once in a while with a giggle." During World War II, Ethel worked at Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Chester, PA in the payroll department.

Ethel had a quick wit, gave the warmest hugs, and read voraciously throughout her life. Her later life's passion was genealogy which she worked on nearly every day with her son, Frank. As recently as the morning of her death, she was regaling the nurses with stories from her family tree, which includes Broomall, Fairlamb, Knight, Crosby, Mower, Thompson, Patterson, Trimble, and Talley.

To her great grandchildren, Ethel once wrote: "At some point all of us ask, where did we come from...the same blood that flows through you, first flowed through them. All of us who love produce wonderful people like you, who are so loving."

A funeral mass will be held at St. Katherine's Catholic Church (chapel) in Wayne, PA on Friday, August 26. The viewing will be from 10 - 10:30 AM followed by the mass.
