Francis Dunbar

July 24, 1920 — February 19, 2015

Francis E. "Dixie" Dunbar, age 94, of Glenolden, PA, formerly of Upper Darby, PA, passed away on February 19, 2015. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Charles and Frances Dunbar (nee Palmer).



Dixie was a 1940 graduate of West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys, where he was a member of the Track team. He attended Villanova University and left to attend King's Point Merchant Marine Academy and served his country honorably during World War II.



Dixie's Track and Cross Country coaching career included Monsignor Bonner High School and Haverford College. He is a member of the West Catholic and Villanova University Halls of Fame. He was employed as a Mechanical Superintendent at Haverford College. He was a long-time active member of St. Laurence Church and was employed as the Church Sexton for many years.



Dixie was the beloved husband of the late Mary E. Dunbar (nee Keefrider) and the loving father of Gregory (the late Denise), Mary P. (Gary McCoy), Michael A., Paul (Marie), Ruth A., Theresa B., Cecilia (Warren) Oertel and the late Richard D. Dunbar. He is also survived by his grandchildren Theresa, Regina, Peter and Sarah, his great-grandchildren Matthew, Valerie, Luke and Abigail and his brother Philip Dunbar.



Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Wednesday, February 25, 2015 7:00-9:00 PM and Thursday, February 26, 2015 9:00-10:00 AM The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike (cor. Lynn Blvd.), Upper Darby, PA and to his Funeral Mass 10:30 AM St. Laurence Church, 8245 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA. Interment SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.



In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to Little Flower Manor, 1201 Springfield Road, Darby, PA 19023 would be appreciated.
