Francis Richard McHugh, Jr.

Francis Richard McHugh Jr., of Drexel Hill and more recently Glen Mills, passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2024.

Born on November 7, 1944, in Philadelphia, Fran was the son of the late Frank and Anne (née Kelley) McHugh. 

Fran is survived by his loving wife Joyce (née Fiocca), with whom he shared 56 years of marriage; his four children Terri Olshefski (Steve), Michael (Lauri), Francis R. III (Ashley), and Erin DeStefano (Eric); along with his grandchildren Hannah, Cassidy, Dean, and Charlotte.

Fran was a proud graduate of St. Thomas More High School and served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Carp (SS-338) submarine, stationed out of Norfolk, VA. While serving, Fran earned his dolphins, signifying he had successfully completed the rigorous training and earned the expertise in submarine operations. 

Following his naval service, Fran built a career as an auto mechanic, working at various local service stations on the Main Line and with Keystone AAA until his retirement in 2003. He continued to contribute to his community through his work with the Delaware County Library Service until his retirement in 2013.

In his leisure time, Fran cherished moments with his family, enjoyed reading the daily paper, and stayed informed on national and local news. He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles and had a deep love for maritime adventures. Fran’s vacations with his family often included time by the ocean, on cruise ships, and exploring on catamarans in the Caribbean. 

Relatives and friends are invited to visitation 9:00-10:15AM, Thursday, September 5, 2024 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073 followed by a Funeral Mass 11:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle in Glen Mills. Interment SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
