Francis H., M.D., 80, of Havertown, PA on January 18, 2015. Dr. Sterling was born August 10, 1934 and was a devoted son to his mother, Kathryn Sterling Ruffu (nee Fenwick) and beloved brother to Catherine Strohlein. He is survived by his nieces, Katherine and Margaret Strohlein and Maria Manning, all of CA.
Dr. Sterling, a renowned and highly respected Endocrinologist, was a longtime teacher at the Medical School of the University of PA, and on the medical staff at the Philadelphia VA Hospital. He taught medicine from 1975-1999, receiving awards for excellence every year during his tenure. Dr. Sterling graduated Cum Laude from LaSalle College in 1956 with a BA and thereafter attended Thomas Jefferson University, graduating in 1960. He served as a Major in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1969. He completed his internship at Misericordia Hospital and residency at the PA VA Hospital.
Dr. Sterling was a brilliant diagnostician and professor, philanthropist, opera buff and loved to travel, especially to Italy.
Dr. Sterling's Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier The Oratory, Philadelphia, on January 31, 2015 at 10 AM. Family will receive friends and colleagues at 9 AM. Burial will be at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA.
Donations may be made in Dr. Sterling's memory to the University of PA School of Medicine or Dept. of Veterans Affairs.
