Born in Czechoslovakia, he was the son of the late Edmund and Ida Horner (nee Rosenzweig).
Dr, Horner was one of the last survivors of the Terezin concentration camp. It was there where he began playing piano and accordion and used music as an escape from the pain that surrounded him and his family.

Dr. Horner held a professorship at Jefferson University Medical School and was Vice President for Clinical Research and Development at Wyeth International.
He continued teaching until 1988 and retired in 1990.
In October, 2013, at the age of 90, he performed piano onstage at Boston Symphony Hall alongside legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma, commemorating the music made at Terezin, and the artists who suffered there.
Dr. Horner was the beloved husband of the late Lili Ruth Horner (nee Berman) and loving brother of the late Vilma Hornerova.
He is survived by his children, Daniel J. Horner of Washington, DC and Michael D. Horner Ph.D. (Amy) of Charleston, SC. Also survived by his grandchildren Logan and Liana.
