Gilbert Martinelli

July 28, 1931 — January 21, 2015

Gilbert J. Martinelli, 83, formerly of West Chester PA, passed away on January 21, 2015, at Harrison House in Cristiana, PA.

Beloved husband of the late, Carolyn A. (nee Pearson) who passed away in 2012, and with whom he shared more than 55 years of marriage.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Gilbert and Elizabeth Martinelli. He was a graduate of West Catholic High School.

He served in The Mediterranean and The Pacific in The United States Navy, aboard the USS Oak Hill, LSD 7. While in the Pacific, he participated in Operation Ivy, an American Nuclear test at Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. On November 1, 1952, he was present at the detonation of the world's first hydrogen bomb, Shot Mike. On November 16, 1952, he also participated in Shot King, the largest atomic bomb detonation up to that time.

After his discharge, he worked at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard for over 30 years as a planner and estimator. He retired at the age of 57, and he and Carol enjoyed their many years of retirement. They travelled on several cruises and enjoyed watching the Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers. They spent many wonderful summers in Ocean City, NJ and Tuckerton, NJ, where family and friends enjoyed their "house at the bay."

In addition to travelling, Gil loved to read. He was a great fisherman and instilled a love of the ocean in his children and grandchildren. He could fix anything that was broken!

Gilbert was the wonderful and loving father of Susan Bruno (Victor), Carolyn Gale (William), Gilbert Martinelli IV (Sarah). He was the dear Pepop of Monica Bruno Herrman, Gilbert Martinelli V, and Nicholas Martinelli. Also survived by his sister-in-law, Anna Marie Alexander and his nephews and niece.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Monday, 9:30 am, at SS Simon and Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Court, West Chester, PA, immediately followed by his funeral mass at 11:00 am. Interment is private.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Magaly, who was a loving companion to Gil and Carol; and to the staff at Harrison House in Coatesville, where he spent his last two months.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harrison House Activity Fund, 300 Strode Ave, E Fallowfield, PA 19320.
