Gilbert H. Showalter, 89, World War II veteran and retired civil engineer, died October 25, 2014 of complications from pneumonia at Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester.
Born in Camden, N.J. in 1925 to Elsie Bullen, Showalter worked diligently to rise from poverty. He graduated from his local high school and went on to serve in the US Army during World War II. The GI Bill then allowed him to attend Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, where he became the first college graduate in his family. Drexel also set the stage for meeting his wife Mary "Mitzi" Showalter, whose side he has rarely left willingly in over 60 years.
A longtime civil engineer, Showalter was part of Aberthaw Construction Company during their participation in the creation of the John F. Kennedy burial site at Arlington National Cemetery. He went on to work for Kilgore Construction Company of Devon, PA, where he retired as President in the 1980s.
Showalter enjoyed maps, history and sport statistics. When not at his desk, one could find him sneaking sweets from the kitchen. A fan of his wife, but not her cooking, the Showalters could be found most nights at local restaurants in West Chester, where they were long time residents.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their son, Jeff Showalter; daughter, Carol Zander; grandchildren, Laurie S. Taber, Jessica Nayor, Jonathan Zander and Zachary Zander; as well as 9 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation at 12:30 pm on Sunday, November 2, 2014, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 pm at the Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382, 610-431-9000.
