Gisela Jost, of Bala-Cynwyd, born May 23 1916 in Tihau, Romania, the last of seven siblings descended from Jozsef Jako, a sometime farmer and gallant gendarme in the Austro-Hungarian Empire passed away on December 16, 2014. She met her sweetheart Frank W. at university in Cluj, then thought they would settle in Hidas, Hungary, to a teacher's life, before they were separated by the war, he in the Hungarian army, she fleeing to Czechoslovakia, then Austria - displaced persons - reunited when he returned from POW in 1947.
In 1956, his cousin, Christian Kirsch, sponsored the family of six to the US where Frank taught at Monsignor Bonner High School for thirty years and Gisela became the darling of the neighborhood children for her famous cookies and baking. To help support the family, she honed her already considerable sewing skills in alterations for Molly's apparel shop and name tags affixed to kids' clothes for Day Camp, bought at Halpern's, both then on City Avenue.
They never willingly moved again. Frank died in 1992 and in 2012 Gisela had to give up raking the leaves and tending her garden when she couldn't handle the steps any more. She then lived at Gilpin Hall, Wilmington, DE, and always longed to go home, which increasingly came to mean her parents' house. She's home now and reunited.
The four children remained nearby, Gertrude Ziga (Anton, deceased), Frank Jost (Kathleen) Gisela Larocco (Dan) and Anthony Jost (Lisa). Thirteen grandchildren are a bit more scattered: Andree, Frank, Bonita and Erik Jost; Helen, Stephen and Kathy Ziga; Christina and Danny Larocco; and Colin, Matthew, Shane and Sarah Jost. Great-grandchildren Alicia, Zachary, Rachel and Nathan Jost as well as Trevor and Spencer Ziga live in PA, while Lewis Tolley is in Atlanta. She was predeceased by her great-granddaughter Beatrice Tolley.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing, Monday, December 22, 2014 10:30-11:30 AM The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike (cor. Lynn Blvd.), Upper Darby, PA and to her Funeral Mass 12:15 PM St. Matthias Church, 128 S. Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bala Cynwyd. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
