Giuseppe (Joe) Spatola, age 84, of Springfield PA, formally of Overbrook, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2018.
Beloved and devoted husband of Maria Concetta. Loving and proud father of Pasqualino (Maria), Maria Antonia (Thomas) McAteer, and Adriana. Devoted and cherished grandfather of Dominic, Alex, and Billy. Dear brother of Lucietta (Antonio) DiTrolio, Donato (Concettina), Maria (Rocco) D'Alessio, and Pasquale (Philomena). He was preceded in death by his parents, Giuseppe and Antonina (DiPopolo).
Giuseppe was born in Calabritto (AV), Italy. As a young man he left his home and made his way to South America. After spending eight years working there, he came to America in 1962. He began working at Lower Merion School District in the early 70's and eventually retired from there. He was skilled in various trades and owned rental properties in Philadelphia and Delaware County. He had a passion for gardening and cooking. If he wasn't watching soccer, you would find him in his yard maintaining his vast collection of fruits, vegetables, and "experiments". Maintaining the traditions of his homeland, he made his own wine, prosciutto, soppressata and tomato sauce which he shared with everyone who visited.
He had an extremely generous heart, fiercely strong work ethic and believed anything could be accomplished if you just put your mind to it. He loved spending time and taking care of his children, still making lunch and dinner every day for his youngest daughter. He taught us how to love, be strong and independent. As a doting Nonno, he watched over his grandchildren with an eye of an eagle, making sure they did not want for anything, even if he had to run out to the store five times to get it. He loved his friends, spending time at the bocci field and cooking for 'boys' night.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Giuseppe's life on Thursday evening, April 26, 2018 from 7 to 9 PM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, 610-353-6300, and Friday, April 27, 2018 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 AM at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Road, Broomall, PA 19008. Interment SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to the American Heart Association, 1617 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Suite 700, Philadelphia, PA 19103 would be appreciated.
