Helen H. Quinn, 92, passed away on November 28 with her children by her side. A native of Cameron Mills, NY, Helen was a long-time resident of Wayne, and a retired teacher and educator.
Helen's passion for learning began in a one room school house in rural upstate New York. With an undergraduate degree from Nazareth College and a graduate degree from West Chester University, she had a fifty-six-year career in education that included teaching positions in New York City, Germany and Delaware County, Pennsylvania. An early trailblazer, Helen served as the first female instructor at Valley Forge Military Academy. She completed her official teaching career at the age of 76 as a reading specialist for Delaware County...but continued her unofficial teaching career with every student she encountered who came to her with a desire to become a better reader.
Helen was predeceased by her loving husband Leonard and her son, Joseph. She is survived by her son Robert, of Stafford, Virginia, her daughter Mary, of Arlington, VA, her daughter and son-in-law Katharine and Brad Vanderau from Devon, PA and her daughter-in-law Cindy Quinn of Berwyn. Helen was the grandmother of seven: Sharon, Christopher, Joseph, John, Teresa, Elizabeth, and Claire; and great-grandmother of five: Rita, JJ, Mina, Wolfie, and Willow.
She was an avid bridge player, continually challenged by the skill of the game and the camaraderie of great friends around the table. She had season tickets to the theater and loved the creative arts. She got a travel bug at a young age and her journeys over the years took her across the country several times and to far off locations including Hawaii, Asia, South America and Europe. Well known for her keen eye for fashion, she was an expert at spotting a bargain at any second-chance boutique she could find.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation 10:00-10:50 AM Saturday, December 3, 2016 at St. Katharine of Siena Church, 104 Aberdeen Ave, Wayne, PA followed by a Funeral Mass 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
Helen was a patriot and humbly proud of all of her family members who had served our nation in the military. In support of other military families, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, #420, Rockville, MD 20850. www.fisherhouse.org
