Helen M. Slobojan (nee Dutka), 92, of Downingtown, PA and formerly of Bucks County, PA passed away on September 15, 2013 at St. Martha Manor in Downingtown, PA.
Born in 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, Helen was the daughter of John and Mary Dutka, who emigrated from Poland in the early 1900's. Her parents raised their three sons and daughter in Philadelphia.
Helen was ten years old when her father died. With the help of her children, Helen's mother supported her family through a grocery store business.
One of the highlights of Helen's life included the friendships she formed with her high school sorority sisters. These women shared the celebrations and challenges of their lives for over 70 years.
Helen flourished as a Cosmetologist and opened her own business in 1939. Throughout her life, she managed this business with excellence and pride.
Helen met her husband, Joseph Slobojan, during her senior year of high school. After a courtship of 3 1/2 years, they married on September 15, 1940. They were blessed with two sons, Joseph and Alan. They had a happy, fulfilling married life. Joseph's health began to deteriorate and he died on August 13, 1982.
Helen led a very active life after her husband's death. She loved to travel, play Bridge and enjoyed creating afghans for her family and friends. She was an excellent cook and extraordinary baker. Helen supported both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philly Pops.
After a sudden stroke in October 2000, Helen moved to Chester County to be near her son, Alan and his wife, Marie. Her years at St. Martha Manor were marked with many friendships and celebrations. She was grateful for the nurturing environment provided there. Her son, Joe, his wife, Barbara and grandson, Michael were able to visit her during her time at St. Martha.
Helen is survived by her sons, Joseph J. Slobojan (Barbara) and Alan Slobojan (Marie); and grandson, Michael J. Slobojan and the late Mark A. Slobojan; and Great-grandchildren, Mariah and Lindsay.
