Howard Lewis Gregg of Newtown Square, PA passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024 at the age of 91. Howard was born on May 12, 1933 in Upper Darby, PA. He grew up in Ardmore, PA and graduated from Lower Merion High School. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Mindoro aircraft carrier, where he did tours of the Mediterranean. How left the Navy after 4 years as a Petty Officer.
A few months after How came home, he met the love of his life Frances (Fay) Carter and they were married in April 1958. They celebrated their 65th Anniversary shortly before she passed away in 2023. Fay and How raised their four children in Audubon, PA: Susan Gregg (Steven Silberberg), Stephen Gregg (Barbara), James Gregg (Melissa LaBarre), and Linda Gregg Titanich (David). He was so proud of his nine grandchildren: William Beck, Jr (Lynnette), David Silberberg, Briana Silberberg, Justin Gregg, Jeffrey Titanich, Heather Titanich, Morgan Gregg, Rose Gregg, and Mary Gregg. He loved his four great-grandchildren: William III, John, Charlotte, and Lucy Beck.
How worked as a Draftsman, Mechanical Engineer, and Chief Design Engineer at several companies in the Philadelphia area. Then he went to Scott Paper Co., where he was a Senior Project Engineer managing the design, development, installation and startup of automated production lines for producing tissue products in Scott mills throughout the United States as well as France and Italy. He retired from Scott Paper Co. after 26 years and really enjoyed his career and the travel opportunities.
How loved music and taught himself how to play the piano and harmonica, which became a lifelong passion. He was an avid reader and passed this hobby on to his children. How and Fay liked to play Bridge and were members of a Bridge Club that played together for over 30 years. He was very computer savvy and enjoyed creating websites for the communities where he lived and the fellow sailors on his Navy ship.
How restored a 30-foot wooden cabin cruiser that the family enjoyed anchoring in the coves near their marina on the Sassafras River in MD. Once How and Fay retired, he built a camper van and then they bought a bigger Roadtrek van and traveled 100 days a year to all 50 US States and every Canadian province. They enjoyed going on cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska, as well as trips to many European countries with the highlight being a trip to Ireland with their childhood friends.
After 10 years of retirement, How and Fay moved to White Horse Village in Newtown Square, PA enjoying many of the activities and events with friends. He was a member of the art club, wine club, and walking club, as well as being on the Board of Directors. He loved being in the chorus and performing in shows throughout the year. How created the inhouse TV channel at White Horse Village and contributed content including presentations of many of their vacations.
How was welcomed into Heaven by his wife Fay, mother Bertha (née Carfrey) Flexin, and his father Howard Oscar Gregg.
