James Patrick Callahan, age 62, of Berwyn, PA, passed away on April 26, 2015. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of Mary E. Callahan (nee McCarty) and the late John J. Callahan, Sr.
Jim was a proud graduate of Malvern Preparatory School. He then majored in Political Science at West Chester University where he got his start in journalism by writing for the school newspaper.
Jim was a student of urban politics earning his stripes covering the colorful characters in Bridgeport, Connecticut's largest city. He enjoyed the give and take with readers and the politicians he covered. As editor of the Bridgeport Light in 1990, a community weekly newspaper, Jim was featured on 60 Minutes in a profile of Bridgeport Mayor Mary Moran, the city's first female chief executive. He also won a statewide journalism award for a photo taken of a brawl during the 1989 Democratic mayoral convention. Jim enjoyed the pressure of meeting deadlines. "A deadline is your friend," he'd tell his peers.
Jim returned to West Chester with the Daily Local News where he honed a reputation for mentoring young reporters.
An acknowledgement of Jim's service as a newsman was read into the Congressional Record by U.S. Representative Ryan Costello (PA-6) on April 13th, 2015. On April 14th, Jim was honored by his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox, with a message on the scoreboard at Fenway Park.
In addition to his mother, Jim is survived by his sons James Owen and Daniel Padraic Callahan, his siblings Helen Lozano (John), Rosemary Heinze (Wayne), Annamary Callahan, Gracemary Lipnicki (John), Mary Carmel Noone (Tom), John Callahan, Jr., Eileen Garner (the late Bob) and Frank Callahan, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
