James Dougherty

January 10, 1928 — December 17, 2018

James Brian Dougherty, 90, of Exton, PA, formerly of Fairfax, VA, passed away December 17, 2018.

Born January 10, 1928 in Casper, Wyoming, he was a son of the late Brian Bernard and Dorothy Helen (nee Dunlap) Dougherty. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Dougherty.

As a youth the family moved to Denver, Colorado where Jim developed a life-long affection for the Rocky Mountain State.

After High School Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain before he retired.

His early Air Force career included assignments in Guam, Alaska and Germany during the Berlin Airlift. While stationed in Tampa, Florida he met and fell in love with a young nurse and they began a life together that spanned more than six decades.

In typical military fashion, they relocated often, including assignments to Dyess AFB in Abilene, TX, Beale AFB in California and Upper Heyford AFB in England before settling in the Washington, D.C. area after his retirement.

He then went on to serve his country as an employee of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) for over twenty two years.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching baseball and football, especially his Denver Broncos.

His love for sports included golfing, bowling and playing senior league softball . . . "well past his prime" as he would often say.

An active member of St. Mary's Parish in Fairfax, he was devoted to his Faith and his family. His pride was his family.

He enjoyed Sundays with his children, grandchildren and recently, great granddaughter . He carried a quiet strength about him that was apparent to all who knew him.

Always giving and supportive, he was there to help however he could.

He was the beloved husband of the late Lydia Marjorie Dougherty (nee Star), with whom he shared 62 years of marriage; loving father of Carol Huxta (Mark) and Brian Dougherty; devoted grandfather of Kristin (Larry), Rebecca, Stephen, Jennifer, and Matthew, and dear great-grandfather of Clare.

Services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
