James J. "Max" Boyle

July 15, 1954 — December 25, 2024

Media , PA

James Joseph “Max” Boyle III, 70 years old, of Media, Pennsylvania passed away on December 25, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born to Mary Louise & James Boyle Jr, he was raised in Briarcliffe, PA and moved to Media, PA in 1997 with his family. Max graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High School in 1972, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology from St Joseph’s University in 1979.

During his amazing lifetime, he owned his own steak shop in Drexel Hill (Max’s Steaks), as well as tended bar at Brownie’s Pub in Woodlyn where he met the love of his life, his wife Tracy. Max and Tracy were married in 1992 and spent 33 wonderful years together. Max was a devout catholic, joining the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and spending his career in the Life Sharing Program, where he helped hundreds of people with intellectual disabilities find living and job placements throughout the region. After retiring in 2016, he spent his time enjoying his two favorite things: sports and his family. Max spent over 20 years coaching basketball at Cardinal O’hara, working as assistant coach to Bud Gardler. He moved on to coach for Riddlewood Baseball, Rose Tree Soccer, St. Francis de Sales CYO, and more, often for his own kids. Max spent his time watching sports, reading and traveling with his friends and family. He cherished his friendships, going back to his early childhood in the neighborhood where he earned the nickname Max.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Tracy Collins Boyle, 3 children, Shannon Boyle, James IV (Madeline Sell) Boyle, Brydie Boyle and their dog, Daisy, 2 siblings Marianne States (Jack States), and Brian E. Boyle (his late wife Christine Boyle), and countless nieces and nephews.
