James J. Larkins, 83, a resident of Barnegat Nursing Home, formerly of Ocean City, NJ and Drexel Hill, PA, passed away peacefully, on Sunday September 4, 2016, after his family was generously afforded the time and opportunity to say good bye and send their loving father/grandfather/brother on to eternal life.
Born in the Highland Park section of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Jim attended St Laurence Grade School and West Catholic High School. He then was drafted into the Army. Following his Honorable Discharge from the Army, Jim met his wife Helen, began his career as a Photo Engraver and moved to Drexel Hill where he lived for over 60 years before retiring to Ocean City.
Jim so enjoyed living near his brother, walking "the boards" and biking all over Ocean City, always stopping to talk everyone. Jim was an active interesting intellectual man...a true Renaissance man. Jim spent his life curious and searching out all the things that interested him. While working hard and raising a family, Jim, by way of example, taught his children to try new things and relish new information. Jim flourished in the environments he created. His family has beautiful memories of his zest for life; recalling all his "phases" from practicing yoga, growing alpha sprouts in the refrigerator or baking bread. Jim loved to travel and was fortune enough to be able to do a lot of that. Jim was an incredible conversationalist. Everyone that knew Jim appreciated his intellect, quick wit and great smile.
Jim was predeceased by parents, James and Anna Larkins; his loving wife of 53 years, Helen (nee Flood); his sister and brother-in-law Adele and Robert Christian; and his sister Dolores Hanhasuer. He is survived by his four children, James J Larkins, III and his wife Kathy Luna, Kathleen Buckley and her husband Martin, Elizabeth Mackolin Dasti and her husband Jerry, Michele Simosik and her husband Frank and 7 cherished grandchildren; Mandee Luna, Kristine Buckley, Martin Buckley, Jerry Dasti, Christopher Dasti, Alex Dasti and Joseph Mackolin. He also leaves behind his best friend and brother, Frank Larkins and his wife Anne as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends and Family may call from 9:00 am to 10:20 am Saturday, September 10, 2016 at The Donohue Funeral Home 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA followed by his Funeral Mass 11:00 am at St. Bernadette of Lourdes Church, 1035 Turner Avenue Drexel Hill, PA.
