James F. Murphy, Sr., 95, passed away on April 18, 2017. He will be remembered as "A Character with Character!"
Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1922, James was the beloved son of the late Luke and Catherine (O'Donnell) Murphy. He was raised in Fairmount, lived in Southwest Philly, Havertown, and finally White Horse Manor.
James served honorably in the US Navy during World War II on the USS Lassen and USS Gage. He was known for his athleticism as a champion boxer in the Navy, a semi pro football player, and a lifelong jogger. James was self-employed, working in the sales of Commercial Restaurant equipment as the Cofounder of American Kitchens. He also set up cancelling machines for the Post Office and enjoyed stock investments.
He was the loving husband of the late Agnes "Babe" Gertrude (Elliott) Murphy; loving father of James F. Murphy, Jr. (Maria Pierangeli Murphy) of Drexel Hill; adoring grandfather of Irene Agnes Murphy; dear brother of Helen Kane; predeceased by siblings, Anna Mae Regan, Rita Kanuik, Catherine Finnegan, Mary Williams, Joseph Murphy, Thomas Murphy, and Bernadine Frio.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 9:15-10:30 AM Friday, April 28, 2017 followed by his Funeral Mass 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 105 Wilson Ave, Havertown, PA 19083. Int. SS Peter & Paul Cem.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Devon Preparatory School, 363 Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333.
