JANICE LOPER FANELLI (Age 91)



Formerly of Havertown, PA, Janice Fanelli, a retired art teacher and fine artist passed away March 5, 2017 at Lima Estates. Willowbrook. She died peacefully from complications of a severe stroke suffered last June.



Janice Virginia Loper was born in 1925 in Millville, New Jersey to Reba Zanes Loper and William C. Loper, a physical therapist. When Janice was four, she and her parents moved to the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia.



Janice Loper graduated from Germantown High School in 1943 and went on to attend the Museum School of Art (later the Philadelphia College of Art and now the Philadelphia University of the Arts) where she was an art education major. She did post-graduate work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Janice did her student teaching with the Newtown Township school system and taught art at Ocean City, New Jersey High School for two years before getting married to Victor Fanelli, a commercial artist, in 1949.



She is survived by three sons, Ronald Fanelli, of Philadelphia, Richard Fanelli, of Alexandria, VA, and Kenneth Fanelli of Ranson, WV, eight grandchildren and three great-grandsons.



Janice Fanelli was a founding member of the Main Line Mother of Twins. The first Twins Club in the United States. She was President of that organization in the mid-1960s.



Janice Fanelli taught Art at Haverford Senior High School from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. She inspired many of her students to pursue careers in Art. After retiring from teaching Haverford Senior High School, she taught occasional art classes at the Wayne Art Center. Janice Fanelli devoted her post-teaching career to painting. Her preferred media were watercolors, pastels and acrylics. She went on to become an award winning fine artist and a member of the Wayne Art Center, the Art League, the Artist's Guild of Delaware County, Woodmere Museum and the Philadelphia Water Color Society. Janice continued to paint and exhibit until five years ago. In June 2014, she had a retrospective exhibit of her work at Lima Estates, where she moved following her husband's death in November 2013.



An annual art scholarship was recently established in Janice's name for a deserving Haverford High School student who will be going on to college to major in art. The first scholarship presentation will be at Haverford High School on the evening of May 24, 2017.



Friends, family and former students are invited to a viewing and celebration of Janice Fanelli's life Monday, March 13, 2017 9:00-10:00 AM and to her Funeral Service 10:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 366 W. Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, PA, followed by interment at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens in King of Prussia.
